In 2004, Laura Baas (1979) obtained a Master’s degree in Development Studies at the Center for International Development Issues Nijmegen (CIDIN), for which she conducted research in two of Nicaragua’s capital’s marginal areas, where she investigated young boys’ perceptions about sexuality. During the first half of 2005 she conducted research in San Salvador in collaboration with university students, and aimed to gain insight into the ways youngsters living in the poorest sectors of town perceive their neighbourhoods, deal with violence, few job opportunities and a poor educational system. During 2006 Laura has been working as a junior programme officer for the Dutch development agency Hivos, while at the same time studying one day a week to obtain a second Master’s degree in Development Studies. In order to receive this degree she investigated the positions of different organisations in the Brazilian nut sector of northern Bolivia. In January 2007 Laura joined the IREWOC Worst Forms in Latin America Project, for which she is responsible for the research in Bolivia.
