Spending many hours in a tannery is very hazardous for one’s health. Most children, just like other labourers, don’t use gloves, boots or masks. They are thus in direct contact with harmful chemicals and hazardous waste produced in the tannery. Sulphuric acid, which is used in some tanneries, may cause permanent damage to the skin. Chemicals such as sodium sulphide may cause cancer after prolonged exposure.
